A very good que in more detail please...?

Derail asked a very good que about engine room failures. I have hardly heard of, and never seen. So, are they common? rare? species prevalent (GM, GE etc)? usually just a cylinder, or nothing left but the wheels and frame? Turbo explosions more than not? Traction motor burnout... when this happens, does the axle work against the train like a sticking break? Be curious to know just how much they dock your paycheck for blowing one of those million dollar puppies to heck and back? Do you get time off w/o pay to think about "your" mistake (not like the motor wouldnt have failed anyways right?)? loss of seniority? When something like this happens, does the train go into emergency? Do you still have power from M/U units?
