Why do Americans seem determined to divide the nation over partisan politics?

There has been a masive surge of name calling, and trash talking between Democrats and Repulicans. How is endless arguing over gay rights, abortion, social programs, foreign policy and any other issue the media tells us is important going to strenthen the nation?
